Science and Professional Work

The goal of the project is to implement experimental quantum communication systems and networks, complemented and integrated with a range of conventional secure communication technologies.

This includes the construction and testing of devices and systems that combine the best of quantum, post-quantum classical and quantum-enhanced solutions.

CroQCI will provide a network architecture and use-case scenarios that will enable the integration of terrestrial infrastructure with the future space component into a fully functional quantum communication network.

The project structure covers quantum communication building blocks, network architecture, terrestrial optical infrastructure, space connectivity, key management and use cases, education, dissemination and communication, and project management.

The project includes the implementation of a pilot terrestrial QKD network based on optical fibres. This will allow the national strategic communication infrastructure to be upgraded to secure information exchange using quantum communication technology, enable connection to the quantum communication infrastructure of neighbouring EU Member States, and support full integration into the future EuroQCI network.

Through activities coordinated with the support of the European Space Agency, the project will also establish the foundations for long-distance satellite-based quantum communication links between Croatia and other EU Member States through an optical ground station.

The transfer of knowledge between the research community and partner institutions will result in new engineers and technicians capable of building components, devices and software for new quantum technologies. This also strengthens high-technology adoption and long-term economic growth.

Project duration: 1 January 2023 – 30 June 2025, 30 months.

Funding: Digital Europe Programme (50%) – EUR 4,999,667.00; National Recovery and Resilience Plan (50%) – EUR 4,999,667.04; total EUR 9,999,334.04.

Project indicators are defined as deliverables achieved throughout the project duration through specific work packages.

The CroQCI consortium connects the key Croatian research, academic and public-sector institutions responsible for implementing the national quantum communication infrastructure.
