Project description

As part of the project activities, detailed analyses were conducted on the databases of all traffic accidents across the Republic of Croatia for the period from 2013 to 2017, obtained from the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Croatia (MUP RH). The analysis of traffic accidents included the examination of their geospatial locations and the characteristics of those accidents that are believed or assumed to have been caused by driver fatigue and/or drowsiness, all aimed at creating the most realistic scenarios (dynamic or monotonous road sections and driving environments) for conducting tests on a driving simulator. During the simulator drives, electrophysiological and behavioral performance parameters were measured, among other things, to obtain reliable indicators of drowsiness and fatigue. The sample of drivers, representing the required age and gender diversity, consisted of both amateur and professional drivers. The ultimate goal of the project was to develop an innovative DFDM system (Drowsiness, Fatigue, and Distraction Monitor System) based on the analysis of driver gaze and/or head orientation to detect driver fatigue and distraction, which would be ready for commercialization on the global market.
