The Faculty’s tradition dates back to 1962, when the postal, telegraph and telephone transport programme was established. In 1965, the creation of the specialised Institute of Transport Sciences was initiated and financially supported by thirteen Croatian companies and associations.

The transport programme for higher professional education was organised by the Faculty of Civil Engineering in 1968 as an inter-faculty programme involving lecturers from the Faculties of Architecture, Economics, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, and Law of the University of Zagreb.

Demand for professional staff in road transport led to the establishment of dedicated education in that branch. After two years of preparation, the Higher School for Road Transport was founded in 1970 at Kraljevićeva 24.

The air transport programme followed in 1972 with the establishment of the Higher School of Aeronautics in Zagreb, first with air transport and aeronautics tracks and later also an aerotechnical track.

In 1981, the Centre of Transport Sciences was founded with two institutions: the Study of Transport Sciences and the Institute of Transport Sciences. The first focused on academic teaching, while the second concentrated on scientific research in transport.

Although railway transport had existed in some form throughout the inter-faculty study period, its true beginning is tied to the decision issued on 13 April 1982, confirming that the Study of Transport Sciences of the University of Zagreb met the conditions for organising and delivering instruction.

On 10 October 1984, the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences of the University of Zagreb was registered as an independent scientific-teaching and scientific-research institution of special public importance. According to the Faculty Statute, that date is marked as Faculty Day.

The Faculty’s development required major effort to secure transport studies an appropriate place within the University of Zagreb’s higher education system.

Today the Faculty operates across three Zagreb locations: Ulica Lavoslava Vukelića 4, Kušlanova 2 and the Borongaj Science and University Campus at Borongajska 83A, while also using facilities at Lučko Airport.

The Faculty employs 212 staff members, including 130 teaching staff and 82 staff in administration and support services.
