Centre of Excellence

The Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences, University of Zagreb, as a scientific and educational institution, has long been a centre of knowledge and expertise in different segments of transport technology and logistics, including road traffic safety. For that reason, on 24 January 2023 the Faculty established the Centre of Excellence for Road Traffic Safety – CISCP.

The Centre primarily focuses on a proactive approach to road traffic safety challenges, which means preventing crashes through positive changes in road-user behaviour, improved design and maintenance of road infrastructure, and improved vehicle safety aspects. Alongside this proactive approach, the Centre also addresses safety through a reactive approach based on historical data, crash analysis, relevant scientific research, and the best practices identified across the European Union and worldwide.

The Centre’s vision is to become a body that is involved in all major road traffic safety segments at the level of the Republic of Croatia and that is also recognised and active internationally in providing innovative solutions for improving road safety. Its main mission is to provide a scientific platform for applied research in partnership with domestic and international public and private stakeholders and to integrate research activities into a safe-system approach that expands existing knowledge and generates new insight.

In line with that vision and mission, the Centre’s core goal is the comprehensive improvement of road traffic safety in Croatia and across the European Union. This goal is pursued through multidisciplinary scientific, professional, educational, and consulting work across the five core pillars of road safety: 1) safe road infrastructure; 2) safe vehicles; 3) safe road users; 4) safe traffic management on roads; and 5) efficient first aid for people injured in traffic crashes.

To achieve these goals, the Centre’s work is structured around four principal activities: 1) scientific research; 2) professional services; 3) education; and 4) consulting.
